Dear Michael,

Congratulations!

The judges have made their selections for the 36th Annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest sponsored by the Songwriters’ Association of Washington. I am happy to inform you that your song received the following award this year:

Big on Your Bird was chosen for the Silver award for the Children’s category

With a record number of entries this year, the decisions were not easy and the competition from your peers made this decision harder than you know. For that, it should be treasured as sweetly won…

Jay Keating, SAW President and 2019 MASC Director

Over the years, I’ve written two children’s musicals with the playwright and songwriter in his own right, Fred Rohan Vargas, that were performed stateside as well as overseas. They were entitled, The Big Eyed Gorilla and A World Without Water.

The Big Eyed Gorilla is loosely based on Faustav and is the story of a kid, Lamont Steptoe who negotiates with the devil to secure a gorilla costume for devious purposes and gets trapped inside it. It opened at the Henry Street Settlement in NYC. A World Without Water is the story of two children, Juan and Juanita, who wish away the clouds and the disastrous consequences that result from their self-centered motives.

I was commissioned by the Don Quixote Experimental Children’s Theatre to write the music and lyrics for Lincoln and the Cool Kid which was performed at the Lincoln Square Theatre in New York. Further, several decades ago,  I wrote two fire safety/prevention children’s musicals called, The Three Little Fire Experts as well as Simon the Sniffing Smoke Detector.

I’m big on your bird
Listen to him sing
I love the way he soars and spreads his wings
And then he tweets
Can’t imagine anything more sweet

Don’t you ever cage him in!
I’m big on your bird
I’m big on your bird
I’m big on your bird
I’m big on your bird

I’m cool with your cat
I love the way she looks and licks her fur
And then meows
Picks me up when I am feeling down

Don’t you ever cage her in!
I’m cool with your cat
I’m cool with the cat
I’m big on the bird
I’m big on the bird

I dig your dogs
Listen to them bark
I love the way they play in the park
And then they growl
Even as they snarl and howl

Don’t you ever cage them in!
I dig your dogs
I’m cool with the cat
I’m big on the bird
I’m big on the bird

You may say that they are cacophonious (sic)
But to me they’re a symphony harmonious

I’m big on your bird
I’m cool with the cat
I dig your dogs
I’m big on the bird…

My name is Simon, The Sniffing Smoke Detector
Yes and I am a safe air inspector
I sniff for smoke in the air
From a fire that burns down there
And if smoke I detect
I will scream to protect
My name is Simon The Sniffing Smoke Detector

My name is Simon The Sniffing Smoke Detector
Yes and I am a clean air protector
I promise you this 24 hours I will sniff
I will sound the alarm to keep you from harm
My name is Simon, The Sniffing Smoke Detector

My name is Simon The Sniffing Smoke Detector
My name is Simon The Sniffing Smoke Detector
I am Simon The Sniffing Smoke Detector

Clothes can burn and catch on fire
There’s only one thing you should do
Fall down on the ground
Roll all around
To get the fire off of you

You gotta stop drop and roll
You gotta stop drop and roll
You gotta stop drop and roll
You gotta stop drop and roll

You gotta stop drop and roll
You gotta stop drop and roll
You gotta stop drop and roll
You gotta stop drop and roll
